Album of the week: Street Talk Part III (FREE ALBUM)

Bleubird: The Rambo of Underground Hip-Hop

Who’s Bleubird?

“I am bleubird, a sailor mouthed silly serious rap renegade. My mother likes to tell me that i’m “anti everything”, i tend to disagree with my mother, even though she claims that janis joplin sang a song directly to her at Woodstock. I’m all for alot of things!

I dislike shaving. I have decent abs from excessive laughter. I want to make friends with your cat, ride your bike, see what your bedroom looks like, use your kitchen, listen to your stories, meet your friends, rock your club, party, bar, basement, garage, pub, venue, parking lot, office, record store….I want to freestyle with southern rock bands and free jazz dou’s. I’ve got side projects with itailan post rockers and german prog rockers. I’m a majority stock holder in boyfriends incorporated…devoutly getting in where i fit in as the mighty too short taught me..it’s all rock and roll to me.

As for some of my shining moments:

- I’ve had the honor of sharing stages with the likes of Deerhoof, Battles, Masta Ace, Fatlip, Amon Tobin, Kid Koala, Otto Von Schirach , De Bug, Dalek, Lightning Bolt, Anti Pop Consortium, Mike Ladd, Xiu Xiu,

- I am one part of international rap conglomerate “Gunporn” , Sweden,Belgium, Germany, America stand up! released a cd/Lp and toured Europe and Japan together.

- Toured france extensively with electro industrial rap superstars X-Makeena

- Rapped at almost every notable rap show in Berlin last year, plus a few others.

- Once I battled a poster of fifty cent at a show on a barge in a river in france, there was also a bridge behind it with a rainbow on it.

- I do a fast clean soundcheck and i’m always friendly with the soundman.

catch-up #2: The general of the funky/pop songs' army

Catch-up # 2 : Good City for Dreamers by General Elektriks

The second episode of the “catch-up” sequel is brought to you by Nicolas VST (from the Police).

The brain behind General Elektriks is half French and half British or in other words half green jelly and half smelly cheese. Does it taste good? I do not think so. Does it sound good? Definitely YES! Good City for Dreamers is a pop/funk record that will give you a big smile on your face for the whole day. Try it!

Acoustic Hip-Hop is the therapy

Speech Therapy by Speech Debelle

A couple of weeks ago I wrote about a bunch of guys called Anti-Pop Consortium doing electronic hip-hop. This weeks’ album is again a hip-hop record but it is completely different. One girl, Speech Debelle, is holding the microphone and the music is completely acoustic. Touches of jazz and trip-hop are present in “Speech Therapy” for listeners’ greatest pleasure.

The songs you must and will not miss: The key, Spinnin’, Bad Boy and Wheels in Motion. Speech Therapy is album of the week on Jenkins’ Glory Radio.

The new album of Brand New is a daisy

DAISY by BRAND NEW

Sing alleluia! Quality hard rock is not dead. You need a proof man of poor faith? I’ve got one for you called Daisy. The album presents solid and heavy tracks that will not let you cold. And when Brand New calm down they do not play a mediocre ballad, like most hard rock bands do, but they go for really inspired pop/rock songs (hear it here). Daisy is a must for every rock ’n’ roll aficionado.

The songs you must and will not miss: Vices, Gasoline, In a jar. Daisy is album of the week on Jenkins’ Glory Radio.

Catch-up #1: The Mystical John Frusciante

Catch-up #1 : John Frusciante : The Empyrean

This is the first post of the « catch-up series ». This sequel presents albums that I missed earlier this year but that fortunately came back to my ears thanks to you. The first episode is brought to you by Xavier (tierce humeur).

What best describes the last solo record of Red Hot Chilli Peppers’ (RHCP) guitarist is the title: The Empyrean which means, for those like me who don’t know what it is :

1. the sky or heavens: the sky or celestial sphere ( literary )
2. highest part of heaven: the highest part of heaven, believed in ancient Greek and Roman times to contain pure fire or light and believed by some Christians to be the dwelling place of God ( archaic )

(taken from Encarta).

The ambiance of the album, released in January 2009, is mystical very far away from RHCP music. It is closer to palace brothers but with longer instrumental parts and more rock oriented. Frusciante is not the best singer of the rock scene but it sufficiently good to haunt the album. His guitar play is as always very good and never demonstrative.

Anti-Pop Consortium: Fluorescent Hip-Hop

Fluorscent Black by Anti-Pop Consortium

In 2003, Anti-pop Consortium released an excellent album in collaboration with the talented pianist Matthew Shipp. It was their last effort before the band broke up. Fortunately for hip-hop fans, they played a reunion show at the Knitting Factory of New York City in March 2008 and 18 months later released a new album: Fluorescent Black. Anti-Pop Consortium kept the same spirit as in the early 2000’s and delivers a high quality record. Sounds, songs’ structure and production are very elaborate. It might be not as innovative as it used to be in the 200-2003 period but it is still first class hip-hop.

The songs you must and will not miss: The Solution, SuperUnfrontable, Capricorn One and Fluorescent Black. Fluorescent Black is album of the week on Jenkins’ Glory Radio.

Brute Chorus: The Brute Sensation

Brute Chorus is a London based 4-piece rock Band. We can hear that BC grew up in pubs by the brute energy they deliver on their new record. Brute Chorus' album is a collection of short and dense songs with a clean but brute sound. The compositions are well written with nice touches of inventiveness and folk inspirations.

The songs you must and will not miss: Grow fins, The ransom (maybe my preferred song) and the cuckoo and the stolen heart.

Brute chorus is album of the week on Jenkins’ Glory Radio.

Interested U.S. readers can click on the above amazon widget to buy the album or songs. It is also available on musicme, lastfm, itunes,….

By the way how many times did I wrote the word “Brute” in this post?

Sincerely,

Mister JGB for Jenkins’Glory Blog.

Flaming lips: An embryonic & psychedelic journey

Did you know that the Flaming Lips released their first LP in 1986? Yes it was 23 years ago. Flaming lips must be the oldest embryo ever.

Anyway Embryonic sounds great and new. It has psychedelic influences from the start till the end and a dirty sound like we could hear on some Primus records. To conclude let me quote a flaming lips fan: "I have it!!!! It's great, it sounds like their old stuff but since they have money now it sounds really great".

Interested U.S. readers can click on the amazon widget to buy the album or songs. It is also available on musicme.

Solveigh's home is cosy

Lionel Solveigh released a few months ago his frist album called "Home" on Humpty Dumpty Records. Lionel's influences are Elliott smith, Kings of convenience, Damien Rice. "Home" is cosy and warm with a few pretty melodies (No man's land; Home again) and a nice cowboy song (John Wayne shot me). The album was mixed by Mark Rankin (Adem, Emiliana Torrini, Bloc Party).

If you're in the U.S. you can download the album or songs by clicking on the above amazon widget. You can also hear and download "Home" on musicme.

Daan lives in Manhay

Daan (former leader of Dead Man Ray) released on 27th march 2009 a beautiful album called Manhay. What does Manhay mean?
Some people will tell you that it is the name of a little village lost in the woods.
Some people will tell you that it is a mysterious place where the songwriter takes his inspiration.
Some people will tell you that they don't care.
Jenkins will tell you that it is the name of an album you must have in your collection.

Do not miss the following songs: exes (damn! it's so good), brand new truth (oh so beautiful), icon (country flavor), radio silence (a killer song), bad boy, bad girl (tremendous bridge), ....

You can buy the album on Daan - Manhay (Bonus Track Version) (available in some countries only) or listen to it on deezer.

For more information on Daan click here.

Sincerely,

Mister Jenkins' Glory Blog

Note: Some of you may know the bass player on this album: the incredible Michel Hatzigeorgiou
