"The Canadian Broadcast Standards Council declares Dire Straits' 'Money For Nothing' unacceptable. 

In 2010, a listener filed a complaint about Newfoundland radio station OZ FM playing the song; specifically about the appearance of the word 'faggot' in the lyrics.

CBC reports that the complaint stated that 'there is absolutely no valid reason for such discriminatory marks [sic] to be played on-air'.

On Wednesday the CBSC issued a ruling saying that airing the song breaches the human rights clauses of the Canadian Association of Broadcasters' Code of Ethics and Equitable Portrayal Code, as it 'refers to sexual orientation in a derogatory way'.

The song has previously been accused of being sexist (for the line about getting 'chicks for free') and racist (for the line about 'banging on the bongos like a chimpanzee') but neither claims have resulted in a ban." (Taken from music-news).

Noise of the Week: Bon Jovi is highest ticket earner of 2010

Bon Jovi have topped the ticket sales for touring acts in 2010. Their Circle The World tour of 2010 scored Bon Jovi over $200 million in ticket sales. The $201.1 million earnings beat out AC/DC and U2 by a huge margin of more than $41 million.

Lady Gaga's Monsters Ball tour netted her $133.6 million in sales (from 138 shows) and Metallica scored $110.1 million. Michael Bublé was the sixth highest-earner, followed by the Walking with Dinosaurs tour, Paul McCartney, the Eagles and Roger Waters rounding out the top ten.

When the list was limited to US ticket sales alone, Bon Jovi was first, followed by Roger Waters, Dave Matthews Band, Bublé and the Eagles. (From Music-News).

Noise of the Week: Clinton sues Black Eyed Peace

George Clinton has filed a copyright lawsuit against members of the Black Eyed Peas, UMG Recordings and Cherry Hill Music for allegedly sampling his song "(Not Just) Knee Deep" on a Grammy-award nominated album.

According to the complaint, filed on Friday in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles, Clinton's song wound up in remixes of the Black Eyed Peas' "Shut Up," first released in 2003.

Clinton's original song appeared on his 1979 album "Uncle Jam Wants You" and ran more than 15 minutes long. An edited version reached No. 1 on the Billboard Black Singles chart, besting Michael Jackson's first solo hit.

"(Not Just) Knee Deep" was later sampled by artists such as De La Soul, LL Cool J, MC Hammer, Snoop Dogg, and Tupac.

George Clinton, a funk pioneer, has become more aggressive on the copyright front in past years with several cases involving his intellectual property. He's enjoyed some success in court, getting a judge to acknowledge his ownership in the legendary phrase, "Bow wow wow yippie yo yippie yay" and winning a ruling that record labels violated his rights by re-releasing four of his 1970s albums. These victories seem to be emboldening him on the legal front.

He's now going after sampling, a music technique that's technically illegal from a copyright standpoint (depending on the nature of the use), but also something that is rarely pursed. Most musicians try to clear samples anyway, but violators have often been given a free pass.

According to the complaint, Clinton became aware of the Black Eyed Peas' use of his old song when a record producer for the band came to him in 1999 and requested a license for a new remix of "Shut Up."

Clinton says he rejected the request, not knowing at the time that his song had already been sampled by the band in a prior version. He says the sample was used by the Peas anyway on the album "The E.N.D.," which was nominated for a Grammy Award for Album of the Year.

Clinton is seeking maximum statutory damages of $150,000 per infringement and an injunction prohibiting further distribution of the infringing song. (Taken from Billboard).

According to Conor Oberst website, Bright Eyes will release the band’s seventh studio album The People’s Key on February 15th, 2011 on Saddle Creek Records. Recorded in Omaha, Nebraska, at ARC Studios, The People’s Key was produced by Mike Mogis and engineered by Mogis and Andy Lemaster.

In support of the album Bright Eyes can announce two very special shows next year: 

Radio City Music Hall in New York City on March 9th  with special guests Superchunk and Wild Flag(Pre-Sale Begins: December 1 at 12PM EST. Public On-Sale: December 4 at 10AM EST) and

London’s famed Royal Albert Hall on June 23rd (Pre-Sale Begins: December 1 at 12PM EST. Public On-Sale: Saturday, December 4 at 9AM GMT).

We can only dream that the new album will be as good as their masterpiece Lifted or The Story Is in the Soil, Keep Your Ear to the Ground relased in 2002.

Bono has revealed, in The Age, that his band is working on three new albums.

The first, which is likely to be released early next year, is being produced by Danger Mouse, the alias for American production ace Brian Burton (Gnarls Barkley, Gorillaz).

"We have about 12 songs with him," Bono said. "At the moment that looks like the album we will put out next because it's just happening so easily."

The second album is what he calls a "club" record, that will feature Lady Gaga collaborator RedOne, Black Eyed Peas rapper Will.I.Am and French superstar David Guetta.

"U2's remixes in the 1990s were a real treasure," he said. "So we wanted to make a club sounding record. We have a pile of songs."

Bono and guitarist The Edge are also attempting to sell their bandmates, bassist Adam Clayton and drummer Larry Mullen jnr, the concept of a U2 album based on the 20 songs the two have written for a Spider-man musical that opens on Broadway next month.

"We haven't convinced the rest of the band to do that yet," he said. "Larry definitely has a raised eyebrow.
